Tent camping can be so much fun for the whole family. We load up the car and drive out to our favorite lakeside campground. The kids take off on their exploration expeditions while we unload and set up camp. Later we cook dinner over an open fire only to watch part of it fall in to feed the flames. Then, when darkness arrives, we get to gaze at the ocean of stars in the night sky. Finally, we kick off our shoes and crawl into the family tent and cozy into our sleeping bags, and drift off to sleep.
Some of my fondest childhood memories are sleeping in my Dad’s old canvas 6 man tent and falling asleep to the light glow of the old Coleman lantern. Such good times.
For many of us, we start out camping with perhaps only one other person, often times our significant other or good friend. But if you’re like me, you blinked and all of the sudden you have a whole family you’re packing up for.
Inevitably, at some point, most of us reach the point where we have to upgrade from the 2 person tent up to a 6 man tent. You may have done a quick search online for the best 6 person tent, and found that there are many to choose from. So I’ve gone ahead and listed what I’ve found to be the best 6 person tent available on the market today.
Why Buy A 6 Man Tent
Here in the United States, most families are made up of 3 to 5 people, which in turn makes 6 person tents one of the most popular size tents today. When you consider the space that 3, 4 or 5 people occupy, in addition to the gear that they carry, things can get tight very quickly.
What we really want for our camping trips is comfort. We want to enjoy wide open spaces both outside as well as inside our living sleeping area. By owning a 6 man tent, we are setting the framework for making great memories with our loved ones. A camping trip that's uncomfortable and cramped for space might be the last camping trip your loved ones go on with you.
Size of 6 Man Tents
Most 6 man tents available today provide between 80 and 160 square feet of indoor living space. When it comes to height, they run between 4 to 7 feet. While shopping for your 6 man tent, keep in mind that the size of the tent (square footage and height) are one of the largest factors when determining price.
Different Styles of 6 Man Tents
There are a few different styles of 6 person tents, each of which have their own pros and cons depending on what you top needs are in a tent.
Dome tents are probably the most common style of tents you see. That’s because they offer convenience in ease of setting up, usually only requiring 3 or 4 poles. This makes setting up the tent fast and simple. Likewise, taking down the tent is fast and easy.
Dome tents are also strong, especially when the winds start to blow. 6 man dome tents will stand up to strong winds as well as branches or other debris that might fall out of surrounding trees.
The best feature about cabin style tents is the overall height they provide. Dome tents might offer a good amount of height in the middle of the tent, but the walls quickly come down on all sides, making it difficult to stand up anywhere but in the middle of the tent. Whereas with cabin style tents, the walls are almost vertical to the tents maximum height, then slowly increases towards the middle.
The downside with cabin tents, however, is cabin tents do not offer the same strength that dome tents tend to provide. If a strong wind were to blow through camp, chances are the cabin style tent would be damaged before the dome tents.
Just like their name suggests, these tents are designed for backpackers. This means backpacking tents are extremely lightweight and compact. At the same time, these tents must also be very strong, since they are intended to be used in the wilderness under more extreme circumstances. As a result, the price of backpacking tents can be significantly higher than other style 6 man tents.
